Our state of the art systems are distributed across four\n\ndata centers and are operated for the Tübingen AI Center, the Cluster of Excellence ’Machine\n\nLearning: New Perspectives for Science’ and the Hertie Institute for AI in Brain Health. Every\n\nday, researchers unleash thousands of compute jobs on our systems, training frontier-scale\n\nneural networks and running experiments.\n\nThe Opportunity\n\nOur clusters keep growing – more GPUs, more storage, and more services around them. We\n\nare looking for an HPC Systems Eingineer who enjoys developing and running production\n\ninfrastructure end to end: from bare-metal compute and the Slurm scheduler to the virtualization\n\nlayer on which central service run, the storage backends and the automation that holds it all\n\ntogether. You will keep our systems fast and reliable, extend them as demand grows, and turn\n\nmanual work into reproducible, code-driven operations that the whole team can rely on. You\n\nwill be joining a motivated team of HPC specialists who share responsibility for the whole\n\nstack, work closely, and have real room to shape how our infrastructure is built and run. You\n\nwill also have the opportunity to shape two new directions: AI agents in our administrative\n\nworkflows, and agent-native access to the clusters for our users.\n\nYour Tasks\n\n• Design and operate HPC clusters across four data centers – spanning inter-/intra-site\n\nnetworks, SLURM scheduling, parallel filesystems (e.g., Lustre/Ceph), and GPU\n\naccelerators – ensuring high availability and sustained throughput for research\n\nworkloads.\n\n• Build and manage provisioning and configuration of heterogeneous compute, storage\n\nand network nodes (e.g. image-based provisioning, node lifecycle, Layer 2 and Layer 3\n\nnetworking)\n\nML Cloud\n\n• Run and extend our Proxmox virtualization clusters hosting the management plane and\n\ninfrastructure services (HA, live migration, backup)\n\n• Operate and scale our storage platforms: Ceph clusters for S3-compatible object storage\n\nfor research data, including capacity planning, tiering, replication and backup\n\n• Automate operations as code with Ansible and Git-based workflows – provisioning,\n\nconfiguration, roll-outs and recurring maintenance\n\n• Build and operate monitoring, logging and alerting, and keep systems patched, hardened\n\nand reliable through regular maintenance windows\n\n• Plan and carry out hardware roll-outs, capacity extensions and migrations together with\n\nvendors and data center staff\n\n• Bring AI agents into our admin workflows and build agent-native access to the cluster\n\nfor users.\n\n• Support and advise users on efficient cluster usage (job scheduling, data handling,\n\nstorage layout, access workflows)\n\nYour Profile\n\n• Masters degree in Computer Science or a related field\n\n• Solid Linux administration experience in a production environment\n\n(RHEL/Rocky/Ubuntu)\n\n• Hands-on HPC experience: Slurm, parallel file systems (Weka, Lustre, Ceph), GPU\n\nworkloads (driver/CUDA, DCGM, Fabric Manager, NVLink/NVSwitch, MIG) and\n\nhigh-speed networks (InfiniBand, 400G Ethernet)\n\n• Solid data-center networking skills: Ethernet/IP (VLANs, routing, bonding/LACP),\n\nInfiniBand fabric management (subnet manager, fabric diagnostics), and firewall/VPN\n\nconfiguration\n\n• Experience operating Ceph and S3-compatible object storage (e.g. RADOS Gateway)\n\nat scale\n\n• Experience with virtualization for the management plane and infrastructure services\n\n(Proxmox, including clustering and backup)\n\n• Strong automation skills with Ansible (roles, inventories, CI-driven roll-outs) and\n\nscripting in Bash and Python\n\n• containers (Apptainer/Singularity/Docker), monitoring stacks (Prometheus/Grafana), or\n\ndatabase and service operations\n\n• A plus: Hands-on LLM tooling (tool calling and APIs, agent frameworks, retrieval and\n\nevaluation)\n\n• Independent, structured working style and good communication in English; German is\n\na plus\n\n• A collaborative, user-facing mindset – comfortable supporting and advising researchers\n\nML Cloud\n\nWhat We Offer\n\n• Technically deep, architecturally open work that directly enables cutting-edge machinelearning\n\nresearch\n\n• A small, senior team with flat hierarchy\n\n• Flexible working hours and the option to work partially from home\n\n• Working in an English-speaking, international team of HPC experts\n\n• Professional development, conference attendance and real influence on our roadmap\n\nInterested? We'd love to hear from you!\n\nDisabled candidates will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants. The\n\nUniversity of Tübingen is committed to equal opportunities and diversity and actively promotes\n\ngender equality. The position is divisible.\n\nPlease submit your application, including CV and relevant transcripts by December 6, 2026 via\n\nour application portal careers.tuebingen.ai. For questions, please contact Simon Kreuzer at\n\n[entfernt]. The position is available from now on.
